Consumer Protection here for our Seniors

Jessica Shaw MLA and the Ellenbrook Seniors’ Social Space hosted Commissioner Hillyard and the Consumer Protection team as a part of their Seniors’ Week celebrations.

The session covered retirement housing options for seniors. The Ellenbrook area has three main providers of seniors housing.

Staff from the Seniors Housing Advisory Centre (SHAC) were available to guide residents through the different housing options and the legal implications for each.

“This is a notoriously complex area to understand,” Ms Shaw said.

“Seniors contact me all the time, expressing confusion about their rights, and concerns about their treatment in retirement housing.”

“I am concerned that our local seniors are not being armed with this vital information when making big decisions, often in traumatic and challenging circumstances.”

“We’ve put locals in touch with the experts who can provide them with the advice necessary for them to make the best decisions about their future.”

“SHAC staff are available to assist through 1300 367 057 or online.”

Experts from WA ScamNet were also on hand to talk seniors through the most common scams that may affect them.

Ms Shaw said “Fortunately, I’ve not had many seniors contact my office about scams.”

“I hope that this means people aren’t being targeted, rather than them being too afraid or embarrassed to speak up and seek help.”

“ScamNet staff are easily accessible online or through 1300 30 40 54.”
