Ellenbrook METRONET line bolstered by Federal Labor commitment

  • $700 million commitment towards the Morley-Ellenbrook METRONET line
  • Planning underway after $20 million injection in the State Budget
  • Thousands of jobs to be created through METRONET construction, manufacturing and surrounding development opportunities
  • Funding forms part of Federal Labor’s $1.6 billion Fair Share for WA Fund - bringing WA’s GST share up to the equivalent of a 70 cent floor

The McGowan Government has welcomed Federal Labor’s $700 million funding commitment towards the Morley-Ellenbrook METRONET line.

The commitment from Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and Federal Labor comes after $20 million was allocated in the 2017-18 State Budget to begin detailed planning and design work on the project.

The Morley-Ellenbrook line will serve Perth’s rapidly growing north-eastern suburbs, connecting them to world-class public transport, reducing road congestion and creating jobs.

It will also open new development areas along the way, creating well-connected new communities around station precincts.

The dedicated METRONET Team has begun work to progress detailed planning and design for the rail line to Ellenbrook, including finalising the precise route and station locations, station precinct planning and considering land sales and value capture opportunities.

Construction of the project is set to get underway in 2019. Additional State funding will be allocated as part of subsequent budgets following the development of the business case.

Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:

“We’re getting on with the job and delivering METRONET across Perth.

“This is the first time the State Government has received a funding commitment from a Federal Government or Federal Opposition towards the train line to Ellenbrook.

“This project will create local jobs and finally deliver world-class public transport to the north-eastern suburbs.

“I welcome Bill Shorten’s commitment and look forward to building the rail line to Ellenbrook.

“We would like to see the Federal Government now match or better this commitment to the Morley-Ellenbrook line.”

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“The Morley-Ellenbrook line is the missing spine in our rail network; it will ease road congestion throughout the north-eastern suburbs and create local jobs.

“This METRONET line will connect passengers to the major employment hubs at Malaga and Morley, linking passengers to jobs.

“After years of broken promises and inaction by the previous Liberal National Government, we have had to start from scratch on this project.

“We have got straight to work and begun the necessary planning to deliver another election commitment.”
